The dollar rose against major currencies except the yen, as the relatively strong US economy and high interest rates attracted investment inflows.

But Switzerland’s lowering of borrowing costs, the first such move by a major central bank in Europe, represented a decisive shift. The Swiss franc lost about 1.5 percent of its value against the dollar this week and about 6.6 percent so far this year. The dollar index rose by 0.26 percent, while the dollar fell 0.26 percent against the yen to record 151.22 yen. The dollar rose about 1.4 percent during the week against the yen and approached levels that had prompted Japan to intervene in 2022.

During the week, the euro against the yen recorded its highest levels since 2008 at 165.37 yen per euro, and the Australian dollar crossed the 100 yen threshold for the first time since 2014. With the rise of the dollar, the euro hit its lowest levels in three weeks. The euro fell in recent trading by 0.3 percent at $1.0829.

The Bank of Japan recently announced a historic shift by abandoning negative short-term interest rates and setting a ceiling on long-term returns, but the effect came very quickly after the yen fell as soon as the news came out, recording the dollar at 151.17 yen. Expectations of policy easing in China have increased pressure on its currency, which fell sharply to its lowest level in four months during internal trading, raising investor concerns and prompting government banks to intervene.

In the latest trading, the Chinese currency reached 7.229 to the dollar, while in foreign transactions the dollar is heading to record the highest increase within one day in a year against the yuan, as the dollar rose 0.7 percent to 7.2716 yuan. The British pound fell 0.6 percent to its lowest level in a month at $1.258 after the Bank of England kept interest rates unchanged yesterday, Thursday. As for cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin is heading for its largest weekly decline since August, with a decline approaching six percent.

In the latest trading, it fell 3.46 percent during the day to $63,192, after falling by about 13 percent since recording a record level approaching $74,000 last week.
