Signs of a political crisis are looming again in Kuwait

A deputy calls for the resignation of the Prime Minister: “The leadership has withdrawn confidence from the government.” These developments come less than a week after the opening of the new legislative term of the National Assembly (Parliament) (KUNA). In what appears to be a looming political crisis in Kuwait again, a member of parliament called on Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf Al-Ahmad to resign, calling on the representatives to cast a vote of confidence in the government, while two other representatives announced the questioning of two government ministers, the Minister of Justice and Housing, and the Minister of Commerce.

These developments come less than a week after the opening of the new legislative term of the National Assembly (Parliament), where the representative of the Emir of the country, Crown Prince Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, stressed in his speech the necessity of “controlling the political scene, evaluating it, amending it, and correcting its distortions,” considering that “performance The government still has not achieved or touched the aspirations of the citizens,” and “the continuation of the political scene in the situation it was in the past will not be in the interest of the nation and the citizens,” and that “it

has led to the obstruction of the development process, and has caused disappointment in the hearts of the citizens in the performance of both authorities.” Legislative and executive. This speech was considered by a member of parliament to be an indication that the political leadership has withdrawn confidence from Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and his government.

Representative Abdul Wahab Al-Issa called on the government “to submit its resignation as soon as possible so that a new government comes in that has the full confidence of the political leadership,” declaring his lack of cooperation with the Prime Minister and his support for a motion of confidence in any of his ministers.

Al-Issa explained in a statement at the media center of the National Assembly, on Sunday, that this council began with unprecedented government parliamentary cooperation, and for the first time in the history of the National Assembly, a single parliamentary bloc of 48 representatives was formed, and a coordination committee was in permanent session. He added that this coordination led to the Council approving 4 laws in its first session at record speed, and the National Assembly together achieved a major achievement.

He stated that on the personal level, he presented a set of initiatives and proposals that came to light at record speed, and people began to feel them in the street because of this government parliamentary cooperation. Al-Issa said: “We were hoping that the second session would begin in the same way as the first session, especially since the Coordination Committee is still holding intensive meetings to discuss priorities with the government until this moment.”

He went on to explain: “Until the sublime speech delivered by His Highness the Crown Prince on behalf of His Highness the Emir, which withdrew confidence from the current government, and lifted the political and legal cover from it,” referring to the Crown Prince’s speech at the opening of the new legislative term of the National Assembly on October 31 (October). ) the past.

Al-Issa explained that this form of the relationship between the political leadership and the government has very serious consequences for the country, especially in light of the regional and economic challenges, pointing out that “the Middle East is in a state of war, and there are major security challenges on our borders in Khor Abdullah and the Durrah field, while We do not have a chief of staff.” MP Abdul Wahab Al-Issa during his statement at the National Assembly’s media center on Sunday (National Assembly)

Al-Issa explained that on the economic dimensions, the Social Insurance Corporation, for example, has a significant decline in its investment returns. He said, “The corporation’s revenues in 2020-2021 amounted to more than 6 billion dinars ($19.4 billion), while in 2023-2024, it is expected, according to the Audit Bureau’s reports, that the corporation’s revenues will not exceed 100 million ($323.5 million), and all of this is due to the delay in… Formation of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Al-Issa pointed out that “there are many examples, and the country’s disruption and paralysis have become clear to the eye,” stressing that “the continuation of this form in the relationship between the political leadership and the current government means that we are facing an indirect disruption of the Kuwaiti constitution.” He added: “Based on all of the above, I call on the government to submit its resignation as soon as possible, and for the political scene not to continue in this way until a new government comes in that has the full confidence of the political leadership.”

Al-Issa said: “Until this day comes, I declare that I will not cooperate with the Prime Minister, and that I support all motions of no confidence in all his ministers.” In addition, MP Miteb Al-Rathaan announced that he will submit a four-pronged interrogation to the Minister of Justice and Housing, Faleh Al-Ruqabah, in the coming days, noting that the axes include justice and equality, the city of knowledge, and some transgressions in the Ministry of Housing.

Last Thursday, Representative Hamdan Al-Azmi submitted an interrogation to the Minister of Commerce, Muhammad Al-Aiban, the first in the current session, which included 6 topics. Al-Azmi stated that the topics related to conflicts of interest, misuse of power, and financial and administrative transgressions.

It is noteworthy that the government anticipated last week the MPs’ attempt to question the Minister of Public Works, Dr. Amani Suleiman Boukamaz, by accepting her resignation, as last Monday (one day after the opening of the legislative term) a decree was issued accepting the resignation of the minister, who is being criticized for poor services, especially with the start of the winter season and the precipitation. Rain. The Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Dr. Jassim Mohammed Al-Astad, was appointed acting Minister of Public Works in addition to his work.
